Sea turtles face a variety of dangers, both natural and man-made.  Threats accumulate over long periods of time and can occur anywhere in a population’s range.  Because sea turtles are highly migratory, localized declines often result from a combination of factors, both domestic and foreign.

The WIDECAST network, with local partners in more than 40 nations and territories, is dedicated to increasing the capacity of Caribbean organizations, institutions, and governments – at both national and regional levels – to reduce these threats and to promote the survival of endangered sea turtles.

Working together to realize a future where all inhabitants of the Wider Caribbean Region, human and sea turtle alike, can live together in balance. http://www.widecast.org/

Familiar with the 3 R’s? We tend to think of Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. In the turtle world, that’s Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release – the mission of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue & Rehabilitation Center in Topsail Island, North Carolina. Their staff consists of all volunteers who consider it a privilege to work with these magnificent creatures. All donations are directly applied to food, medical supplies and operating costs of the turtle hospital. They receive no state or federal funding. Hold a Great Bake and donate to http://www.seaturtlehospital.org/

The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies is a non-profit organization that provides public education, conservation and research on marine mammals. They are also the premier stranding organization in the Gulf region of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as they rehabilitate sick and injured marine mammals.

Follow the sea turtles that were rescued during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, rehabilitated at IMMS, and later released. These 6 Kemp Ridley’s have satellite tracking devices that will yield valuable information about their migration patterns. Their movements resemble my first attempts of drawing with crayons!

Consider holding a Great Bake to help IMMS! www.imms.org

A Great Bake will take place during the Love A Sea Turtle Trail Run on April 2. An enthusiastic turtle supporter volunteered baked goods to sell. It just so happens that she is a pastry chef. Oh, how sweet it is!

Over 70% of the planet needs you – the ocean. Be an Ocean Hero by holding a Great Bake sale and help Oceana protect the world’s oceans. Oceana seeks to make our oceans as rich, healthy and abundant as they once were. It’s time to give back!

Oceana, founded in 2001, is the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation. Our offices in North America, Central America, South America and Europe work together on a limited number of strategic, directed campaigns to achieve measurable outcomes that will help return our oceans to former levels of abundance. We believe in the importance of science in identifying problems and solutions. Our scientists work closely with our teams of economists, lawyers and advocates to achieve tangible results for the oceans. www.oceana.org
